Illinois law prohibits recreational ATV use on streets, highways, and roadways, except for crossing. Local municipalities can allow ATVs on streets under their jurisdiction if they pass an ordinance to do so. You must have a valid driver's license to ride on a street or public roadway, and you must have the vehicle properly insured. Your ATV also must have several other pieces of equipment, such as headlights, brake lights, and a mirror to operate on the street.
